The free adoption program at the Taylor County Animal Shelter has ended. During a special called meeting Thursday , August 23rd, Taylor Fiscal Court voted to discontinue free adoption at the animal shelter after several people showed up at the meeting to complain that animals were being given to people whose background had not been checked to assure the animal would be properly cared for. Some of those in attendance also said they believe people paying for animals would be more likely to provide a good home for the animal. Taylor Fiscal Court also voted in favor of requiring anyone who wants to volunteer at the Taylor County Animal Shelter to fill out an application and submit to a background check. In regard to the mold issue at the Taylor County Judicial Center court members voted to have the entire building tested. Thus far only a few areas of the building have been tested. Several persons who work in the building have reported issues such as coughing, sore throat and other problems that could possibly be the result of high levels of mold in the building. Taylor Fiscal Court also voted in favor of hiring a person that would be an employee of the county to oversee maintenance at the Taylor County Judicial Center as opposed to contracting with an outside entity.
